    What Il Vero Alfredo is known for

    1. The dish

      The fettuccine are mixed at the table with butter and young parmesan until they make their own sauce. There is no cream in it and never was.

    2. The golden fork and spoon

      In the 1920s the film stars Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks gave Alfredo a gold fork and spoon. They are still used to serve the pasta to the guests of honour.

    3. The walls

      Covered from floor to ceiling with signed photographs of the famous who came to eat it.

    A dish made for a tired wife

    Alfredo Di Lelio first made the dish in 1908, by the family's account, for his wife after the birth of their son. In 1914 he opened a restaurant in Via della Scrofa, where American visitors found it and took the recipe home. He sold that restaurant in 1943, and in 1950 opened this one with his son.
