Babington's
In 1893 tea in Rome was sold in pharmacies. Two young women, one from England and one from New Zealand, decided the city's foreign colony deserved better, and opened a tea room on Piazza di Spagna.

The tea room is in the eighteenth-century house on the left of the Spanish Steps, facing the house across the stair where Keats died.

Isabel Cargill and Anna Maria Babington came to Rome in 1893 and opened a tea room for the English-speaking visitors of the Grand Tour. It moved to Piazza di Spagna soon after and has been there ever since, through two wars.
