A grand hotel to match the other capitals
The prime minister of the day, the Marquis di Rudinì, wanted Rome to have a hotel that could stand beside those of the other capitals of Europe, and persuaded César Ritz to build one. Ritz bought a site by the Baths of Diocletian in 1893, where a large hotel designed by Giulio Podesti was already going up.
The papers of the time called it one of the most splendid hotels in Europe. It is now a St. Regis hotel.
