Verona and Lake Garda
An hour and a quarter west of Venice by train, Verona keeps one of the best preserved Roman amphitheatres anywhere, still used for opera in summer, and the squares of a medieval city. Half an hour beyond it, Sirmione juts out into Lake Garda behind its castle walls.

Why Verona is worth it
Verona was a Roman city, then the seat of the Della Scala family, and fell under Venice in 1405. Its Arena, of the first century, could hold some thirty thousand people and is still the stage of a summer opera festival.
Lake Garda, the largest lake in Italy, lies just to the west. Sirmione, on a narrow peninsula, has a moated castle of the Scaligeri and the ruins of a great Roman villa.
What to see
The Arena
The Roman amphitheatre on Piazza Bra, with its pink stone tiers.
Piazza delle Erbe
The old forum, now a market square ringed with frescoed houses.
Juliet's House
A medieval house with a balcony, made into the home of Shakespeare's Juliet.
Sirmione
The castle in the water and the lake on three sides.
How to do it well
- Verona alone is easy by train: frequent fast trains take about an hour and a quarter.
- A tour is the simpler way to add Sirmione and a boat on the lake.
- Opera at the Arena runs from June to September.
