Lázaro Galdiano Museum: one man's collection in his own house

Few people find their way to this palace in a garden off the Calle Serrano, and those who do have its rooms almost to themselves. It holds the collection of one man, who bought paintings, jewels, swords, fans and manuscripts for fifty years and gave them all to Spain.

A collector's house, left to the nation

José Lázaro Galdiano was a publisher and financier who spent his fortune on art. In 1903 he built himself a palace, which he called Parque Florido after his wife, Paula Florido, and had its ceilings painted for it.

When he died in 1947 he left the house and more than twelve thousand objects to the Spanish state. The rooms were rearranged as a museum and opened in January 1951, keeping much of the feel of a private house.

It is a cabinet of everything: Spanish painting from the fifteenth century to Goya, English portraits, Flemish panels, medieval enamels from Limoges, ivories, Renaissance jewellery and the arms and coins he hunted down across Europe.
