Fraunces Tavern

Samuel Fraunces opened a tavern in this house in 1762, when New York was a British town of twenty thousand people. Twenty-one years later the commander of the American army chose it for his farewell dinner.

    1. The Long Room

      The upstairs room where, on 4 December 1783, Washington took leave of the officers who had fought the war with him. It is kept as it would have looked, and is part of the museum.

      The upper floors hold a museum of the Revolution and of the house, with its own ticket. The restaurant and the bars fill the ground floor.

      Built as a home in 1719 and much rebuilt since, it is counted the oldest building standing in Manhattan. The towers of the Financial District rise on every side of it.

    The tavern of the Revolution

    Fraunces named his house the Queen's Head. Before the war the Sons of Liberty met in it, and when the British army left the city in November 1783 the new governor gave a dinner here for Washington. A few days later the general called his officers together in the Long Room for the last time.

    The building passed through many hands and several fires. The Sons of the Revolution in the State of New York bought it in 1904, restored it over three years, and have kept it since as a museum with a tavern below.
