Katz's Delicatessen

Katz's is a vast, bright, noisy room that has fed the Lower East Side for more than a century. You queue at the counter, a cutter slices your pastrami by hand, and hands you a piece to taste while he does it.

What Katz's Delicatessen is known for

    1. Pastrami on rye

The sandwich the house is known for, piled high and served with pickles. The kitchen gets through nearly seven tonnes of pastrami a week.

    2. The ticket

Everyone is given a ticket at the door. Each counter marks on it what you have taken, and you pay on the way out. Keep hold of it.

    3. The table

A sign hangs over the table where Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal sat in When Harry Met Sally, in 1989.

    What to know

    • Founded in 1888, by the house's own account
    • The food is Jewish in style but the kitchen is not kosher
    • Send a salami to your boy in the army, its slogan of the Second World War, still hangs on the wall

    From Iceland Brothers to Katz's

By its own chronology the delicatessen was opened on Ludlow Street in 1888 by two brothers named Iceland. Willy Katz joined them in 1903, his cousin Benny in 1910, and the cousins bought the brothers out and gave the shop its name.

The district round it was then the most crowded Jewish quarter in the world. Most of its delicatessens are gone. This one has become the place people mean by the word.
