What Lombardi's is known for
The coal oven
The pies are baked in an oven fired with coal, which gives a thin crust with a charred edge. They are sold whole, not by the slice.
The claim
The Pizza Hall of Fame recognises Lombardi's as the first pizzeria in the country. Later research has found others that opened a few years earlier, but none that lasted.
Nolita
The pizzeria is on the corner of Mott Street, a few minutes north of Little Italy and Chinatown.

Tomato pies wrapped in paper
Lombardi's first shop was at 53½ Spring Street. He trained the men who went on to open the other old pizzerias of the city, and passed the business to his son.
The original closed in 1984. Ten years later his grandson reopened it a block away, in premises chosen because they already had a coal oven.
