Tavern on the Green

Until 1934 sheep grazed the meadow in the south-west of Central Park and slept in a fold of red brick beside it. Then the parks commissioner moved the sheep out and a restaurant in.

      A long Victorian building of brick and stone by Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mould, two of the park's own designers. The dining rooms are in its wings.

      In the warmer months tables are set outside under the trees, which are hung with lanterns after dark.

      The restaurant is just inside the park at West 67th Street, five minutes from Strawberry Fields and beside the finishing line of the New York City Marathon.

    Robert Moses and the sheep

    The sheep were sent away in 1934 by the parks commissioner Robert Moses, who had the fold turned into a restaurant in a matter of months. It has been leased out by the city ever since. It shut in 2009, served for a while as a visitor centre, and reopened with new operators in 2014.
