What sets The Sherry-Netherland apart
A small hotel in a tall building
The tower has thirty-eight floors and 165 apartments owned by their residents. The hotel rooms are scattered among them, each furnished differently.
The lobby
A vaulted hall with painted ceilings, set with carved stone panels that came from the Vanderbilt mansion which stood across the avenue.
The spire
The roofline, with its gargoyles and a slender spire, hides the water tank. When it opened, at 171 metres, it was the tallest apartment hotel in the city.
The corner of the park
The door is on Fifth Avenue facing Grand Army Plaza, opposite the Plaza, at the south-east gate of Central Park.

Built on the site of an Astor hotel
The Sherry-Netherland replaced the Hotel New Netherland, built for William Waldorf Astor in the 1890s. Schultze and Weaver designed it with Buchman and Kahn. While it was going up, in April 1927, the wooden scaffolding round the top caught fire and burned for twelve hours, in sight of half the city.
The apartments were sold to their residents in 1954, and the building has been run as a cooperative since.
