Café Hoppe

Hoppe is the brown café at its most Amsterdam: dark wood, casks of jenever behind the bar and a crowd that spills out on to the Spui on a fine evening. It has, by its own account, been here since 1670.

What Café Hoppe is known for

    1. Two rooms

Number 18, the older half and a listed monument inside and out, is standing Hoppe. Number 20, joined to it through a doorway in the 1930s, is sitting Hoppe.

    2. The casks

Old casks of jenever and liqueur stand behind the bar, the drink the café was known for long before beer.

    3. Politics at the bar

The café's own history says Hans van Mierlo laid the groundwork for the D66 party here, and that Princess Beatrix came in before she was queen, collecting for the Salvation Army.
