What sets St. Pancras London, Autograph Collection apart
The grand staircase
A double stair that sweeps up three floors under a vault painted with stars, with ironwork and wallpaper of the 1870s restored to their first colours.
The building
Scott designed it after losing the chance to build the Foreign Office in Gothic. It opened in 1873 with hydraulic lifts and a revolving door, both new to England.
Saved twice
The hotel closed in 1935 and became railway offices. In the 1960s it was to be pulled down, and a campaign led by the poet John Betjeman saved it. His statue stands in the station.
The station
The trains to Paris and Brussels leave from the platforms behind the hotel. The British Library, with Magna Carta on show, is next door.

The Midland Grand
The Midland Railway held a competition for a hotel to stand in front of its new station, and Scott won it with a design far larger than the brief. The first part opened in 1873 and the rest three years later.
It had too few bathrooms to survive the twentieth century and shut in 1935. After a restoration that took ten years it reopened as a hotel in 2011.
