M.Manze

Pie, mash and liquor was the dinner of working London for a hundred years: a minced beef pie, mashed potato and a green parsley sauce. A handful of the old shops survive, and this is the oldest of them.

    What M.Manze is known for

    1. The shop

It has hardly been touched since it opened. The walls are tiled, the tables are marble, the benches are narrow, and you queue at the counter.

    2. The dish

Pies are baked on the premises through the day. The liquor is made with parsley, and vinegar with chillies stands on every table. Eels, stewed or jellied, are the other thing on offer.

    3. Tower Bridge Road

The road runs south from Tower Bridge through Bermondsey. The antiques market in Bermondsey Square, on Friday mornings, is at the next corner.

    What to know

    • Opened by Michele Manze in 1902
    • The oldest pie and mash shop in London still trading
    • Counter service only: you queue, and carry your plate to a bench
