The round hall at the centre, where shipowners once came to pay their dues, was destroyed by a bomb in 1940 and has been rebuilt as the hotel's bar and lounge under a new dome.

The Port of London Authority
The Port of London Authority was set up in 1909 to take charge of the docks, and held a competition for its headquarters three years later. The building was finished after the First World War.
The authority left in the 1970s and the building became insurance offices. It has been a Four Seasons hotel, with private residences, since 2017.
