What The George Inn is known for

    1. The galleries

Two tiers of black and white balconies run along the front, from which travellers reached their rooms. It is thought that plays were acted in yards like this before London had theatres.

    2. The bars

A row of low rooms on the ground floor with bare boards, lattice windows and benches. The oldest was the waiting room for the coaches.

    3. Dickens

He knew the inn and named it in Little Dorrit. His life insurance policy hangs on a wall.

    What to know

    • Rebuilt in 1677, after a fire that destroyed most of Southwark the year before

An inn on the road to Canterbury

There was an inn here in the Middle Ages, next to the Tabard, from which Chaucer's pilgrims set out. Both burned in the Southwark fire of 1676 and were rebuilt the next year.

The railway took two sides of the yard for warehouses in the nineteenth century. What was left was given to the National Trust in 1937.
