The first of the grand hotels
The Langham was built between 1863 and 1865 to the design of John Giles and opened on 10 June 1865 by the Prince of Wales, the future Edward VII. It had six hundred rooms then.
It was badly damaged in the Blitz, served the BBC for forty years, and was restored and reopened in 1991. It is the flagship of the Hong Kong group that took its name.
