The Connaught
The Connaught is the most private of London's grand hotels. It began as two Georgian houses in 1815, was rebuilt in the 1890s, and changed its German name for an English one in the middle of the First World War.

What sets The Connaught apart
The staircase
A broad mahogany stair climbs through six floors from the front hall. The American designer Ralph Lauren liked it enough to have a copy built in his shop in New York.
The Connaught Bar
A panelled room in silver leaf, where the martini is mixed at your table from a trolley. It has more than once been named the best bar in the world.
Silence
In front of the hotel stands a water sculpture by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando: a pool round two old plane trees, from which mist rises every quarter of an hour.
Mount Street
The hotel faces one of the best-kept streets in London, of pink terracotta shops and galleries. Berkeley Square is two minutes away and Hyde Park ten.

From Coburg to Connaught
The hotel opened in 1815 as the Prince of Saxe-Coburg Hotel. The Duke of Westminster's estate had it rebuilt between 1892 and 1897 as the Coburg, and in 1917, when German names were out of favour, it was renamed for Queen Victoria's son, the Duke of Connaught.
General de Gaulle lived here for part of the war. The hotel belongs to the Maybourne group, and a new wing was added when it was restored at the end of the 2000s.
